A timeless ‘Grande Dame’ of Amsterdam hotel scene.
With almost 160 years of history, Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky Amsterdam, is a place steeped in stories. A jewel in the heart of the Dutch capital and the sole dream of tailor Adolf Wilhelm Krasnapolsky.
With a tailoring diploma, Adolf Wilhelm Krasnapolsky, a young polish man, arrives in Amsterdam at the age of 22. Following his long days at work, he seeks solace in one of the coffee-houses around Dam square, weaving new friendships and discussing dreams.
Following the path of his family tradition and influenced by newfound acquaintances, Adolf Wilhelm Krasnapolsky decides to take over a coffee-house in Warmoesstreet.
Fuelled by ambition, Mr. Krasnapolsky expands his café empire by acquiring a second adjacent building and rebrands as ‘Nieuwe Poolsche Koffijhuis’.
Being a man with a vision, he decides to build a new coffee house, today known as Grand Café Krasnapolsky. A spacious café adorned with high ceilings – a distinctive feature for its time. The new venue’s popularity soared thanks to the quality of food and the delectable pancakes served.
Wintergarden is built into a belle époque indoor tropical garden. A power station was added to it, lighting the Dam area. Thousand Edison light bulbs illuminated the venue, hailed as 'the miracle of the century.' It hosted celebrations like King Willem III's 40th year as monarch and his marriage to Princess Emma.
The entrepreneur plans a business expansion with an introduction of a hotel project featuring 125 rooms designed in the neo-Renaissance style. This establishment stands as Amsterdam's sole hotel equipped with the modern luxuries of hot water and telephones in every room.
The founder unveils ‘The White Room’, a ground-floor restaurant now deemed one of Amsterdam's oldest. This registered monument preserves original styles, featuring authentic wall panels adorned with paintings and ornate ceiling embellishments.
Amsterdam's dance ban is lifted, and Mr. Krasnapolsky secures one of six coveted dance licenses. The once-unprofitable summer garden gained a roof, turning into the hotel’s first Ballroom.
Three years later, the hotel is extended with a new wing on Warmoesstraat and its entrance is shifted in the direction of Dam Square.
The Grand Ballroom is built as a spacious and versatile venue. Today it is ideal for conferences, banquets, exhibitions and seamlessly connects with the Wintergarden. Conveniently located on the ground floor, it has a separate street entrance and proximity to guest parking.
The White Room – a restaurant of white and gold - celebrates its centennial. As a testament to tradition and taste, its culinary offering is focused on local Dutch specialties featuring lamb fillet from the island of Texel and Cheese from the Beemster region.
Restaurant The White Room, Wintergarden, and the passage achieve national monument status, honouring the hotel’s historical significance. This recognition solidifies the building’s timeless appeal and cultural importance to the city of Amsterdam.
Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky stands now as a prestigious five-star establishment in the beating heart Amsterdam: Dam Square.
NH Hotel Group purchases the building which was rebranded after two years as NH Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky – a combination of a modern establishment and a conference centre.
Following years of refurbishments, the hotel re-emerges as NH Collection Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky with 451 rooms. A flagship within NH Collection, and one of its only three properties in the Netherlands.
The White Room by Jacob Jan Boerma under the helm of Chef de Cuisine Arturo Dalhuisen is awarded its first Michelin star at the annual Michelin Gala in Amsterdam.
