Luxury hospitality with a mindful approach

Every June, Anantara Bazaruto organises a charity run across the island’s idyllic landscapes to collect funds for community projects.

The first edition in 2019 supported the completion of a local health centre (with daycare, a maternity unit, laboratory and pharmacy) in Zengelemo. Inaugurated in 2020, the centre provides much-needed medical care to island residents who would otherwise have to access health and emergency services on the mainland (25km away).

Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort is committed to socially responsible initiatives such as:

● Working with local government to build three local primary schools since 2018
● Training initiatives including English classes for the local community
● Storage facilities for local fishermen (supporting the fish trade with 24-hours power supply and security)
● Food donations (In August 2022, 112 bags of rice distributed to approx. 304 households)

The 1 Less Thing programme offers guests the possibility of leaving behind a “reverse souvenir” – an item no longer desired or overpacked. Our resort collects these items, including clothes and toys, as donations for the local community.

With a philosophy of “Small Space. Little Effort. Big Impact,” Pack for a Purpos encourages travellers to make a lasting impact on the communities they travel to by bringing with them supplies to donate to local schools or medical clinics. Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort invites guests to support the project by saving a little bit of space in their suitcase for small items that can positively impact the lives of local children and families.

We care about ensuring the livelihood of local entrepreneurs and supporting the rich vibrancy of the Bazaruto culture. We practice responsible tourism through several initiatives such as:

● Raising cultural awareness via music and dance performances, artisanship, dhow cruises, and more
● On-site indigenous shop selling fair-trade handicrafts from Mozambian and Bazaruto craftspeople

Our efforts to reduce waste include limiting single-use plastics, recycling stationary and the introduction of the biodegradable straws across the resort. Our reusable, washable laundry bags are made from traditional Capulana fabric sourced by local villagers in Vilanculos.

Since 2004, our resort has equipped two villages with six water holes. A mix of manual and electronic systems with solar panels, the water holes provide clean drinking water to the local community.

On-resort water conservation initiatives include the phasing out of plastic bottles and the planned launch of a filtering and purifying water systems to also offer this island freshwater in recycled glass bottles.
