Dive Into Conservation: Exploring Marine Life at Anantara

Sustainability
The Maldives is a breathtaking paradise, known for its stunning overwater villas, crystal-clear lagoons, and vibrant marine life. But beyond its beauty lies the commitment to marine conservation that sets our Maldives properties apart. At Anantara Dhigu Maldives Resort, Anantara Veli Maldives Resort, and Naladhu Private Island Maldives, guests can immerse themselves in unique marine conservation activities while enjoying luxurious accommodations.

Coral Reef Restoration

The heart of Anantara’s marine conservation efforts is its commitment to coral reef restoration. Yes, the coral reefs around these resorts are picturesque underwater landscapes. But more than that, they are vital ecosystems that support a diverse array of marine life. In 2016, the Maldives faced a severe coral bleaching event that devastated many reefs. In response, we launched the Holistic Approach to Reef Protection (HARP), a project aimed at regenerating damaged coral reefs.

Guests can participate in this initiative through various activities:

  • Coral Nurseries: Join the HARP team to help cable-tie small pieces of coral onto ropes, which are then placed in nurseries. Watch as these nurseries blossom into healthy coral structures before being transplanted to the reefs.
  • Coral Adoption: Adopt a piece of coral and receive updates on its growth and the positive impact it’s making on the reef ecosystem.

Turtle Conservation

Another cornerstone of Anantara’s conservation efforts is the protection of sea turtles. The Maldives is a crucial nesting ground for these magnificent creatures, and our marine biologists work tirelessly to ensure their survival. Oriana Migliaccio, a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer with a PhD in Life and Biomolecular Sciences, currently leads these initiatives.

Guests can engage in several educational and interactive activities:

  • Marine Talk on Coral Reef and Marine Life: Attend weekly sessions to learn about the importance of coral reefs and responsible diving practices.
  • Discovering Marine Biology for Kids: Spark curiosity in young minds with fun, interactive lessons about the underwater world.
  • Workshop on Repurposing Ghost Nets: Transform abandoned fishing nets into bracelets, raising awareness about their impact on marine life.

Marine Biologist-Led Adventures

Experience the wonders of the Maldives’ marine life through guided excursions with our expert marine biologists:

  • Visit the Coral Nursery: Snorkel in the coral nurseries and explore the various species of coral, while learning about the resort’s restoration efforts.
  • Dolphin Watching: Embark on an ocean safari to observe dolphins in their natural habitat, a year-round activity that provides a closer look at these playful creatures.
  • Whale Shark and Manta Ray Identification: Participate in photo-ID programmes, aiding in the study and conservation of whale sharks and manta rays.

Sustainable Practices

Anantara’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond marine conservation. These resorts implement various eco-friendly practices to minimise their environmental impact:

  • Water and Energy Conservation: Efforts are made to reduce water and energy consumption across the resorts.
  • Waste Management: Solid waste is reduced, reused, and recycled, with composting programmes and the purchase of recyclable products.
  • Local Engagement: The resorts work with local communities to promote cultural awareness, provide opportunities for local artisans, and source sustainable products.

At Anantara, luxury and conservation go hand in hand. You are not only treated to an unforgettable stay in paradise, but also have the unique opportunity to make a positive impact on the environment. Whether you’re planting corals, protecting sea turtles, or learning about marine life, every moment spent at these properties contributes to preserving this beautiful destination for future generations to come.
