Women in wine: Thailand's pioneering female sommeliers

Culinary

Thailand is not historically renowned as a nation of oenophiles, but over the past few years, this has begun to change as a growing trend and appreciation for wine has seeped into the culture. Several award-winning vineyards have sprung up across the country. The rolling hills that surround Bangkok in regions such as Hua Hin and Khao Yai are proven to offer fantastic grape-growing climates, sheltered against much of the tropical heat that Thailand is famed for.

Wine beginnings

When did you become interested in wine?

Khun Nuch: Since 2008, I was keen to improve my beverage knowledge and language skills, and I came to realise that wine and its endless conversation topics allowed me to delve much deeper and learn more than other beverages ever could.

Emma: In 2020, someone introduced me to a Primitivo from Puglia. I shared the label with my teacher, who suggested pairing it with pesto pasta. He also reminded me of a key lesson from our wine class: "Salt is wine's best friend". That dinner was a turning point for me, I was completely captivated by the harmony of wine and food pairing. I realised that wine is an art, and from that moment on, I fell in love with it.

Becoming experts: Education and training

When and where did you train to become a sommelier?

Khun Nuch: From 2014, I travelled to the United States and began the Court of Master Sommelier (CMS) introductory certificate, once I completed that, my wine education has intensified, and I am currently studying for the advanced certificate.

Emma: In the wine industry, a true sommelier is someone who works in a restaurant and engages directly with guests. Since I had previously worked in wine distribution, this role at Anantara Lawana is my first step into the hospitality side of the profession. In preparation for this, my General Manager supported my training with Khun Nuch from Anantara Siam to develop my skills in professional wine service. This training took place in June 2024, ensuring I was fully equipped to handle operations in a hospitality setting.

Professional backgrounds

Khun Nuch has refined her sommelier expertise through extensive training across the globe and at Thailand's most distinguished hotels. As PSAT Director & General Secretary, she has represented Thailand on international platforms, including Vinexpo Asia in Hong Kong and Asian Wine Trophy in South Korea. Her remarkable dedication to the art of wine has earned her numerous distinctions, including Thailand's Best Sommelier 2019 and the Chilean Wine Trophy 2019.

Emma's professional journey began in the wine distribution industry, where she gained valuable experience in various roles at Italasia Trading and Wine Aspect before joining Anantara Lawana as a Wine Guru. Her educational achievements include French Wine Scholar certification, and Italian Wine Scholar studies, many supported by scholarships that have enriched her wine expertise.

Passion for the grape

How did the passion about wine come about?

Khun Nuch: In its own unique way, wine has more personality than any other drink, there is wine on every occasion and celebration, wine can also enhance every dining experience and conversation. For me, there is always happiness when wine is involved.

Emma: Studying wine has opened my mind to so many fascinating subjects – climate conditions, terroir, geography, hemispheres, global wine regions, history, plant biology, and more. This knowledge has expanded my perspective and given me a deep appreciation for the craft.

The Anantara experience

What is your favourite part of being a sommelier at Anantara?

Khun Nuch: I am proud to be representing Thailand in the heart of Bangkok at Anantara's flagship hotel, it inspires me to be a great Thai sommelier with a modern mindset and to prove that Thailand and wine can go hand in hand together.

Emma: One of the most unique aspects of my role is working at Tree Tops Signature Dining, an exclusive restaurant with only 8 private salas nestled among a 120-year-old tree and ancient rocks. People from all over the world book months in advance to experience it.

The best part? Hearing guests' feedback on my wine pairings. Every time I present my recommended wines, I get to share my knowledge and passion. Seeing guests enjoy the experience, knowing I've helped elevate their dining journey, makes my heart race with excitement. It's truly fulfilling to connect with people through wine and create memorable moments for them here on the island.
