VOLUNTEER TASKS & ACTIVITIES

Masuwe Primary School

Visit the Masuwe Primary School to carry out any maintenance or repairs needed and spend time playing with the local children. This educational facility with no electricity is located on the border of the reserve and serves around 150 children.

Alien vegetation removal

We clear any invasive plants that disrupt the natural habitat to restore indigenous flora and reduce unnecessary water use. This helps to strengthen the ecosystem and creates a healthier environment for the wildlife.

Anti-poaching snare sweeps

We search the reserve regularly for wire snares and illegal traps set by poachers and remove them to prevent the injury or death of the native wildlife. This activity helps keep the animals safe and reduces the likelihood of poaching.

Fence patrols

To prevent livestock from escaping and ensure predators cannot enter, we regularly check the boundary fences of the reserve. This maintains the safety of the reserve and allows us to identify and minimise any damage if it occurs.

Game census

We count and record the populations of each species to monitor their numbers and track population trends. This helps guide our management of the reserve and make informed decisions that support a balanced ecosystem.

Waterholes maintenance

It is vital that the reserve wildlife has access to clean water all year around. We maintain and dig waterholes to support the animal health and ensure they have water during dry seasons. Regular monitoring is also part of this activity to identify any issues early.

Pack for a Purpose

You are invited to bring supplies on your journey to donate to the children of the Woodlands community and Masuwe school. Items such as crayons, erasers, manila paper, solar calculators, encyclopaedias, flash cards and appropriate books are some of the suggested donations.

Road maintenance

To ensure that conservation work vehicles can move easily at all times, we monitor and repair the reserve’s roads to keep them safe and accessible. Keeping the roads in good condition helps prevent erosion and lowers the impact on the environment.

Reserve clean-up

We host regular clean-ups of the reserve, removing any litter or debris to protect the wildlife and prevent any pollution.

Soil erosion control

To protect the landscape and support healthy plant life, we maintain the topsoil and help reduce the impact of water run-off. This is essential for biodiversity and helps stabilise the natural ecosystem.
