Sitting quietly on a stretch of private beach overlooking Quy Nhon Bay in this undiscovered part of the South Central Vietnamese coast, lie 26 villas within just over 7 hectares, showcasing the ultimate in local architectural influence, rich heritage and traditional craftsmanship.

The main design for the 26-villa resort was undertaken by HB Design, founded by Hans Brouwer in 1995 following a distinguished career working for Sir Norman Foster. Taking inspiration from indigenous aspects of Binh Dinh Province, of which Quy Nhon City is the capital, as well as regional influences and typical Vietnamese characteristics, striking elements and subtle touches are highlights.

The spacious villa sundecks are made from locally-crafted teak wood adding sleek lines and cool shadows poolside and from the low overhanging roofs extending over the decking. Villa interiors boast a contemporary feel peppered with features emphasizing quintessential Vietnam from historic sculptures and artworks, to modern-day style lighting and soft furnishings, bringing out the colours of the sand, sea and sky.

Modern bright bathrooms with floor-to-ceiling windows and oversized bathtubs with a view are decked out with blue granite and white marble, native to the region, bringing a modern yet rooted flair to the interior.

The open-air lobby, set in the heart of the resort, brings old traditions to life with chairs and large sofas inspired by the typical round basket boats, or ‘thungs’, once the only way to go about one’s daily life and still a major form of transport throughout the country today. A large decorative piece spanning the length of the lobby’s back wall directly represents the design of the original fishing traps used by native fishermen to collect squid, lobster and daily catches, a nod to the region’s core essence.

The resort’s signature restaurant Sea.Fire.Salt. also benefits from a large teak wood deck flowing out onto the infinity poolside area. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and even daily tea and coffee is served on ceramic crockery, all locally-made within Binh Dinh Province.

The use of traditional teak wood can also be seen at Anantara Spa, where treatment pavilions both among the trees and overlooking the ocean, as well as the large yoga deck space, all embrace this homegrown feature.

Blending into the picture-perfect surroundings, the resort is hugged by mountains on three sides and its natural landscape is filled with lush, tropical greenery, local plants and flowers.

“The overall master concept was to create a secluded and private guest experience of being hidden among nature. The design of the villas followed the existing typography and we retained the original rocks and trees of the natural landscape, while crafting a seamless living experience. We wanted the architectural language to be contemporary, yet show the infusion of indigenous materials and ornaments.” said Mr. Hans Brouwer, Design Director, HB Design Co., Ltd.

“The interior concepts of the resort’s common areas were inspired by Vietnamese traditions and local bamboo craftsmanship, which influenced the patterns and character of the design elements we used, leaving guests with both a strong sense of place and uniquely local experience,” said Yu Jordy Fu, Creative Director, Marques & Jordy London, who spearheaded the interior aspects of the resort.
