Venture through historic havens around the globe, from the shores of Vietnam to the coast of the Mediterranean. Uncover the rich history of Chiang Mai through its ancient fort walls and temples, discover diverse wildlife of Sir Bani Yas Island, immerse yourself in Vienna’s Baroque splendour, and soak up Nice’s unrivalled coastal elegance.

Fort walls and temples – Chiang Mai

Popularised by its relaxed atmosphere and lush, mountainous views, Chiang Mai was the former capital of the old Lanna Kingdom, which ruled northern Thailand for centuries after its formation 700 years ago. You can still witness the city’s historic past today. Stroll through the city centre, and you will notice the red bricks of the old fort walls that encircle it, as well as Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Phra Singh, and Wat Chiang Man, all built in the 13th and 14th centuries. Widely considered the most iconic historical temple of all is Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, located on the nearby mountain overlooking Chiang Mai. Today, the town is known for its rich cultural heritage, historical temples, and vibrant arts scene.

Where to stay: Anantara Chiang Mai Resort is located along the quiet Mae Ping River, within walking distance of the old town. The resort was formerly a British consulate in the 1920s, and the original building has been carefully renovated to reflect this heritage.

Majestic wildlife and deserts – Sir Bani Yas Island

Sir Bani Yas Island in Abu Dhabi stands out for its striking salt dome formations, including its rich history. This island, once a hub for pearling mentioned by Italian merchant Gasparo Balbi in 1590, is now a fascinating destination for history enthusiasts. Declared a nature reserve in 1971, the island is now home to the Arabian Wildlife Park, where thousands of free-roaming animals thrive. In 2023, the Sir Bani Yas Island Visitor Centre was inaugurated, offering an immersive experience that connects visitors with the island’s diverse historical and cultural heritage. Explore the island to discover remnants of a 7th-century Christian church, ancient Neolithic tools, and a Bronze Age trading settlement.

Where to stay: Anantara has three unique resorts located on this extraordinary island. Stay in the lush savannah at Anantara Al Sahel Resort, combine the beach, desert and wildlife in one at Anantara Desert Island Resort, or enjoy a more rustic beachfront escape at Anantara Al Yamm Resort.

Baroque palaces and historic buildings – Vienna

Vienna is widely renowned for its crucial role in shaping European history as the centre of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It was also the seat of the Habsburg dynasty and a hub for significant cultural and intellectual contributions, hosting influential figures like Mozart, Beethoven, and Freud. Additionally, Vienna was pivotal in major diplomatic events, notably the Congress of Vienna in 1814-1815, which reshaped Europe after the Napoleonic Wars. The city’s rich architectural heritage is evident today in its Baroque palaces and historic buildings, offering a captivating glimpse into Vienna’s grand past and cultural legacy.

Where to stay: Anantara Palais Hansen Vienna was designed by architect Baron Theophil Edvard von Hansen, reflecting Vienna’s Neo-Renaissance style and heritage. Located on the famous Ringstrasse, developed in the mid-19th century, it offers easy access to the city’s premier museums, opera houses, parliament buildings, and classic coffeehouses.

A fascinating blend of heritage – Hoi An

Hoi An plays an important role in Vietnam's history as a major trading hub from the 15th to the 19th centuries, drawing merchants from across Asia and Europe. Explore the well-preserved old town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which features a unique blend of architectural styles, including traditional Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese influences. The city retains its charm today with its cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and vibrant lantern-lit evenings. Walk through the town to visit the popular Japanese Covered Bridge, built in the early 17th century with distinctive Japanese wood carvings. Also, visit the Tan Ky Old House, dating back to the late 18th century; this perfectly preserved merchant’s home offers a rare glimpse into traditional Hoi An life.

Where to stay: Anantara Hoi An Resort offers boutique luxury nestled on the edge of the Thu Bon River. It’s less than a kilometre from the UNESCO World Heritage town and boasts scenic river and expansive garden views. Travel aboard The Vietage for a heritage-style luxury train ride that connects Hoi An to Quy Nhon and Nha Trang.

A coastal retreat for aristocrats – Nice

Located on the beautiful French Riviera, Nice boasts a rich history dating back to its foundation by the Greeks in the 4th century BC, when it was called Nikaia. In the 19th century, Nice was a fashionable resort for European aristocrats, as reflected today in its iconic Promenade des Anglais. The city has retained its charm with its beautiful beaches and vibrant Old Town along the coast. Wander through its streets to discover the historic Château de Nice (the city’s former mediaeval fortress) and the Musée Matisse, which showcases works by the famous artist who lived in the city. The bustling Cours Saleya market, known for its fresh produce and flowers, provides a lively taste of local life.

Where to stay: Anantara Plaza Nice Hotel is a contemporary-style retreat housed in the historic Belle Epoque building from 1848, following a complete renovation by award-winning designers. Its prime location makes it easy to explore the beautiful Place Massena and the Promenade des Anglais.
